Airports in Chicago

It is since the early 1990s that Chicago has experienced a complete makeover with increase in ethnic diversity and with the inclusion of many previously abandoned neighborhoods, like the South Loop, West Loop, Wicker Park or Bucktown, Uptown. The term 'Chicago' is of French origin, meaning wild leek. Airports in Chicago are the signs of its development. Airports in Chicago are four in number.

Chicago is given the nickname of "The Windy City". Chicago is served by two major airports:
  • Midway International Airport: Chicago is mainly served by the Midway International Airport located on the southern side.
  • O'Hare International Airport: This is one of the busiest airports in the world. O'Hare was the world's busiest airport in terms of aircraft movements in 2005. It was also the second busiest airport in terms of total passenger traffic.
There are also some minor airports in Chicago. They are as follows:

  • Gary or Chicago International Airport is situated in the vicinity of Gary, Indiana. It acts as the third airport of Chicago. Chicago is the main hub for United Airlines, which is the second-largest airline in the world as per the revenue-passenger-kilometers parameter. The Midway airport acts as a 'focus city' for the Southwest Airlines which operates the cheapest flights in the world.
  • Rockford International Airport or the Greater Rockford Airport is the regional base for United Parcel Service cargo flights and certain passenger flights. Chicago is the world headquarters for United Airlines. Midway airport also operates as a 'focus city' for Southwest Airlines.
  • Meigs Field: Chicago used to have a fifth airport, which was abruptly closed in 2003.it was located on the waterfront of Lake Michigan near the Grant Park. Long term scheduled flights to Springfield were operated from this airport. There was even some service to other cities. The airport runways were suddenly closed for the purpose of developing the land. The Federal Aviation Administration fined the city for this sudden closure.
