O’Hare International Airport

O'Hare International airport is among the two most important airports serving Chicago. O'Hare is situated in Chicago, Illinois in the United States. This airport is located 27 km on the northwest of the Chicago Loop. It is mainly operated by the Chicago City's Department of Aviation along with the help of an umbrella regional authority. United Airlines operates mainly from this airport. It is also the second-largest hub of the American Airlines. In terms of takeoffs and landings O'Hare was the world's busiest airport till 2005. It carried out 64% scheduled commercial, 33% air taxi, 3% general aviation and less than 1% military aircraft operations. O'Hare International Airport has four passenger terminals serving it. Two or some more additional terminals are yet to be built. There is the chance of construction of a large terminal complex for the western part of the field. Chicago O'Hare International Airport has the provision of 186 aircraft gates covering the 4 Terminals (1, 2, 3, and 5) and the 9 concourses (B, C, E, F, G, H, K, L, M).

The airport was originally constructed as a manufacturing plant for Douglas C-54s during World War II in 1942-43. The location of this airport was optimum for its closeness to the city center and transportation points.

O'Hare's has a high volume of traffic and an extremely tight schedule. This pressure on the flight schedule and the airport is likely to lead to cancellation of flights and long delays in the arrival and departure of the flights. These cancellations and delays can affect the economy of the whole of United States. Thus, official reports have ranked O'Hare as an airport with the least amount of punctuality in the United States.

United Airlines and American Airlines agreed in 2004 to modify their flight schedules to help reduce the overload on air traffic caused by same-time arrivals and departures. Thus, as of 2005, it was decided that the O'Hare airport will be expanded to make room for a more number of flights, their take-offs and arrivals. Today, O'Hare is served by over a hundred different airlines flying to all parts of the world as well as serving its domestic destinations.
