Meigs Field in Chicago

The construction of the Meigs Field in Chicago began soon after the Second World War, during the year 1946. The state legislature of Illinois granted 24 acres of land for additional purposes, so that the runway of this airport could easily be broadened. Finally, on the 10th of December, 1948, the Meigs Field in Chicago was inaugurated and opened for the public.

The Meigs Field in Chicago comes up with a traditional picture resembling much that of a lakefront located somewhere downwards. Association with the Microsoft Midtown Madness, a famous computer based game, has also fetched enormous glory for this Chicago based airport. The terminal part of the Meigs Field in Chicago, the one which is also considered to be the most integral part, is monitored by the Aviation Department of Chicago. The terminal building of this Meigs Field airport contains administrative office as well as counter space. The runway of this Chicago based airport measures some what 3900 feet in length and 150 feet in width. In addition to this palatial dimension, four launch pads for helicopters located near the southern end of the runway can also be traced out.

There have been numerous controversies associated with this Chicago based airport. The start of such a controversy can be traced out during the year 1994, when a park was proposed to replace this Chicago based airport. Even the lease period for this airport was refused to be renewed during the year 1996. However, due to immense pressure from the state legislature during the month of February 1997, the Meigs Field airport of Chicago had to be re-opened.

On 30th of March 2003, even private crew was appointed to demolish the runway of this airport during the midnight, without notifying the Administration of Federal Aviation. However, during September 2006, $1 Million USD repayment was agreed upon by the state, in an attempt to restore back the Meigs Field airport of Chicago.
