|
Union Station in Chicago is one of the important landmarks that are identified with the city of Chicago, US. Opened in the year 1925 it is the only intercity rail terminal in Chicago. Regarded as one of the great achievements in the railroad facility planning, it turned out to be one of the busiest and more important railway stations in the US, catering to more than 300 trains and over 1,00,000 passengers a day at some point of time. However, changing needs of the times and renovation in 1992 by Lucien Lagrange Associates brought in a new look to the Union Station. It currently serves all Amtrak intercity trains to Chicago and Metra commuter Rail lines such as South West Service, North Central Service, BNSF Railway Line, Heritage Corridor, Milwaukee District West Line and Milwaukee District North Line.

Among the various architectural splendors here Great Hall of Union Station is regarded as one of the finest indoor spaces anywhere in the US. Terracotta walls, pink Tennessee marble floor, 18 towering Corinthian columns along with a five-storey barrel vaulted atrium-ceiling makes up the magnificent Great Hall that with its exquisite 3500 square foot large gallery is also used for big receptions and parties.
And to co-relate the architectural marvel of Union Station with Chicago’s emergence as the symbol of economic might and prosperity, there are future plans in the offing to redevelop it. 8, 00,000 square foot of more space is to be added to convert the station into a vibrant, contemporary structure that provides for a mix of retail, housing, hotel and business together. As per the plans, a total of 6, 10,000 square foot of office space, 89,000 square foot of retail and a 320-room luxury hotel along with a 40,000 square foot state-of-the-art conference facility are in the pipeline.
Chicago is one of the popular locations for tourists in the US. The Union Station in Chicago is one such attraction that combines the best of tradition and modernity. A part of the American heritage, this structure indeed showcases the history of city and the nation in a prudent manner.
